Special Education for School-Aged Students

Every school district has the legal responsibility to identify, locate and evaluate children who are in need of special education services, the law calls this Child Find. To qualify, a child must have one of the identified disabilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) and it must adversely affect their educational performance.  Special education pertains to students ages 3-21.

If your school-age child is having difficulties in school, talking to his/her teacher will assist in understanding what supports the school has for students within the regular education setting.  If general education supports have not been able to help your child, your child may have a disability which affects his/her learning.  To find out, you can make a referral to the Committee on Special Education (CSE).  For more information, Scio Central School’s Student Services Office can be contacted at 585-593-5510 Ext. 1140.
